The Shamrock Trail, Tracing the Irish in Quebec City
Les Éditions Livres Carraig Books, 1998, 32 pages
Description :
This handy tourist guide offers the choice of three different tours of Quebec City characterized by memories left by the Irish : public and commercial buildings, private houses, monuments, etc.
The booklet contains photos, copies of original documents and maps of the proposed three tours. It can be easily slipped into a handbag or a pocket.
The Shamrock Trail is actually an intensive lecture on the history of Quebec City, on the important contribution of the Irish to this history. Easy to consult, it can be read by those who cannot come to Quebec City, for it is interesting and instructive. It can also be a good tool for teachers of history.
Excerpt :
This trail was begun on the occasion of the Irish Summer in 1997. Its origins go back further than that however. My brother Brendan (now deceased), who loved the city as much as I do, and who knew its nooks and crannies better than I, suggested a walking tour with shamrocks painted on the sidewalk. Some day! Stories found here come from many of the people I have known who lived in the city and shared their memories with me.I dedicate this trail to all the Irish who lived in many districts : Champlain Street and the Ramparts, and around the Parliament buildings; on many streets from Lachevrotière and St. Michael to Murray Avenue and beyond, but very especially I dedicate this tour to my brother Brendan.
