Saint Patrick's, Quebec
Édition Carraig Books, 1981, 124 pages
Description :
The history of Saint Patrick's parish of Quebec from 1827 to 1833 is described in this book. It is mainly about the building of a church and of a parish in Quebec City by the Irish population who had a strong desire to own a church where they would feel at home.
In 1831, a lot was purchased on Sainte-Hélène street, in Upper Town, inside the walls of Old Québec in order to build a church. It was the work of architect Thomas Baillargé.
The author relates the numerous events concerning the birth of the parish, the dedication of the priests who served there, the parish activities of the Irish and many other details.
Unfortunately, in 1970, fire destroyed this beautiful church.
With appropriate photos of the church, priests and of a plan of part of Quebec City, this book is very interesting reading.
Saint Patrick's Quebec was published two years after the French translation. It was actually the first book published by Carraig Books, founded by Marianna O'Gallagher in 1981.
Excerpt :
Who built Saint Patrick's ? The Irish population of Quebec City did. By the beginning of the 1820s they had grown enough in numbers and in group awareness to desire a church of their own. They built a church, and in so doing, they also established themselves as a specific group of Catholics differing in language and culture from their French-Canadian brethren, having different needs, but expecting to have them filled at the one source : the Church .Saint Patrick's in Quebec City was one of the first «ethnic parishes» in Canada. The Montreal Irish were soon to follow the example of Quebec in building their own Saint Patrick's.
